Mono no aware- Beauty is precious because it is brief.
Four years ago, someone asked me if I knew anything about Japan in the Middle ages. At the time, I could honestly say I knew nothing about Japan during the middle ages, as it just wasn't something I had ever really encountered. Not long after, one of my dear friends, who had spent several months in Japan, brought to my attention "The Pillow Book" by Sei Shonagon. My perceptions on Medieval Japan were forever changed from the moment I picked up the book and read the first passage that you saw upon entering this website. From there, an idea was borne, and a little over two years ago, another friend expressed her own interest in developing a Japanese persona within the confines of the SCA, and in the attempt to maintain some connection from Japan to the rest of the SCA. After months of conversation, we developed the Heian Project. Today, we have gathered much research, developed classes, and discovered things far beyond what we had imagined. The flavor of the Heian Culture was that of society desperate for its own voice, a seperate voice from China, with its own unique art and social mores. Bourne from such desires, the height of the Heian ere was one of extravagance, extroidinary poetry and literature, and some of the social customs that even today mark Japananese culture as a unique and beautiful one of delicate expression and tradition. Welcome, to the Heian Era, and to the Heian Cultural Anthroplogy Project. Sayyidaefendi (THL) Jahan Ara bint al-Yehya amat al-Hafeeza |
